Fulbright Denmark Award Ceremony
On June 6, 2019 Fulbright Denmark held its annual award ceremony celebrating the homebound American grantees and the new Danish grantees for the academic year 2019/2020. The Fulbright Denmark offices were filled to the brim with former and current grantees as well as friends and supporters of the Fulbright program. We were also very pleased to welcome the American Ambassador to Denmark, H.E. Carla Sands, U.S. Embassy Denmark, who gave a few remarks and showed her support for the Fulbright program in Denmark.

Wrap-up & Pre-departure Seminars
The day started with a wrap-up seminar for the American students and scholars, who got the chance to discuss their experiences with living, studying and working in Denmark for a year and share all that they have learned from it. This year, we have had the pleasure of welcoming five American Fulbright students and two American Fulbright scholars, and all of them were present for this seminar, except for Kirby Parnell, who has had to leave Denmark early in order to start a Ph.D. program at the University of Hawai’i.
After the wrap-up seminar it was time to meet the new Danish grantees. We held a pre-departure seminar where all the Danish Fulbright students and scholars could meet the Fulbright Denmark staff and each other and hear important information about their upcoming stay in the United States. American Fulbright scholar Sarah Hentges spoke about academic life in the U.S. and the new Fulbrighters were able to ask any questions on their minds. This year we are pleased to have increased our amount of Danish grantees a great deal: seven Master’s students, eleven Ph.D. students and four scholars will receive the Fulbright scholarship this year. We were also joined by three students who have received the Thanks to Scandinavia scholarship.
We must dare to think 'unthinkable' thoughts. We must learn to explore all the options and possibilities that confront us in a complex and rapidly changing world.
- Senator J. William Fulbright
Re-branding and Awards
The award ceremony began after the two seminars had finished and we were joined in the offices by our 70 or more guests. Executive Director Marie Mønsted spoke a few minutes about the Fulbright program and our new profile, including the cooperation with Sustainia on the new website and graphic design. Marie was followed by H.E. Ambassador Carla Sands who praised the Fulbright program and Danish-American cooperation. After the two speeches, the American Fulbrighters all received their certificates of completion, shook the hand of the Ambassador and were celebrated for their accomplishments in Denmark.
The award ceremony was followed by a reception and although the offices were swelteringly warm due to the June sun, lively conversations quickly erupted throughout the rooms. We enjoyed cold rosé wine and finger foods and many cheerful guests lingered after the reception was officially over.
We at the Fulbright offices had a fantastic day celebrating all our amazing grantees and we look forward to hearing about the experiences of our Danish Fulbrighters and to welcoming the new group of American Fulbrighters this summer and fall.
