Fulbright Grants for US Scholars
Interested in teaching and doing research in Denmark?
Fulbright Denmark has three types of Fulbright scholar grants to Denmark.
We offer a Distinguished Scholar Award in American Studies (academic year preferred), an All Disciplines Award, and a Community College Faculty Award (one semester).
All U.S. Scholars interested in applying for a Fulbright Scholar grant to Denmark must go to the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Catalog of Awards website to read about the general rules on citizenship, length of stay, academic level, etc. and the country-specific demands for Denmark. You can learn more about Fulbright Denmark’s selection process and criteria here.
Please note that as a Fulbright Scholar you cannot undertake additional jobs while in Denmark; although Danish law has been amended and foreign researchers and Ph.D. students are now allowed to hold sideline jobs without having a separate work permit – this is not the case as a Fulbrighter.
Our grants are always subject to revision for fiscal reasons.
After 9 years at my host university, I was ready for a sabbatical and a serious returning of my career goals. I felt burned out. Coming to Denmark helped me refocus.

The things Fulbright Denmark did to prepare us, with the orientation and handbooks was fantastic. Everything I need to do know was there, it seemed.

Academic year
2026/2027
Amount

Deadline
Deadline for the academic year 2026/2027 has passed. The next competition will open in Spring 2026.
Who can apply
U.S. students (see eligibility)
Eligibility
Fulbright’s grants are awarded to the most talented graduate and PhD-students who demonstrate outstanding academic performance and will actively contribute to the promotion of mutual understanding as cultural ambassadors of the U.S. in Denmark.
If you are awarded a Fulbright grant, we will help and advise you through the entire process. In addition, you will be invited to a Arrival Meeting in late-August where you will receive practical advice and meet other future Fulbrighters.
Dual citizens of the U.S. and Denmark are ineligible for consideration. Students with dual U.S./other country citizenship may be accepted for a Fulbright grant to Denmark, but must always enter Denmark on their U.S. passports and must have permanent residence in the U.S.
Undergraduate students are not eligible for a Fulbright grant. Learn more about how to study in the U.S. as an undergraduate student here.
Admission/Affiliation
Applicants must apply independently for admission to the Danish university and comply with their application deadlines at the same time as the Fulbright application is submitted.
University admission guidelines can be found at the university websites. Applicants must clearly state in their contact with the Danish institution that they are applying for a Fulbright grant, and the application to Fulbright must include a copy of admission correspondence/letter of affiliation.
Admission to a Danish institution of higher learning is necessary in order to comply with Danish residence permit laws, and all candidates must therefore be admitted to a Danish institution that has legal status to aid the student in applying for a residence permit. The Fulbright grant to Denmark is therefore dependent on a successful admission to a Danish institution of higher education.
In order to obtain a Fulbright grant to Denmark, all applicants must comply with all study program requirements of their Danish study program in order to maintain their student residence permit in Denmark.
Fulbright Denmark is willing to assist you with contact information to appropriate Danish institutions.
Affiliation with SUND, University of Copenhagen
Please note that the SUND Department (Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences) at University of Copenhagen only accepts PhD guest students and degree-seeking Masters students. Admissions will not accept applications from non-degree applicants.
Tuition
A Fulbright grant is only for one/the first year of study in Denmark. An applicant to Denmark must declare, as part of the application process, whether he/she is degree or non-degree seeking.
It is possible to apply for a Fulbright grant both as a guest student to Denmark or as a degree seeking student. A Fulbright guest student will not have to pay Danish tuition while on his/her Fulbright. However, a Fulbright student seeking a full Danish degree will have to pay full tuition for all the years of the degree. Any later change of status from non-degree to degree seeking while in Denmark may not be possible but will involve retrospective payment of tuition for the first year for the Fulbright student.
Under no circumstances can Fulbright Denmark be responsible for any financial or academic changes due to these plans. It is the sole responsibility of the applicant to research any degree and financial possibilities after the Fulbright grant period.
In doubt whether your Fulbright plans are possible? Please contact us.
Apply for an Inter-Country Travel Grant
The Process of Applying
Before the visit
The Fulbright Scholar identifies a higher education and/or research institution in Denmark.
Alternatively, the Danish host institution contacts the Fulbright Scholar during their Fulbright grant period in Europe.
If the Danish host does not have a specific Fulbrighter in mind, they can identify a suitable scholar from the database of U.S. Fulbright scholars in Europe for the current academic year. The Finish Fulbright Center maintains an updated list of the Current US Fulbright Scholars in eligible countries.
Scholar and Host get in touch and agree on dates, content and logistics of the visit. Host must confirm willingness to cover in-country expenses.
Host completes and submits a Fulbright Inter-Country Travel Grant application to Fulbright Denmark.
Scholar and host institution will receive a joint letter from Fulbright Denmark with the grant decision – and, if selected, with details of the grant as well as other important information to help with your travel plans.
After the visit
The Scholar’s airfare costs will be reimbursed either directly to the host institution or to the visiting lecturer after the visit, and against submission of travel tickets and receipts.
Fulbright Denmark requires the submission of a Fulbright Inter-Country Travel Grant Report form and one or two photos from the visit.

Fulbright Inter-Country Travel Grant
Fulbright Denmark participates in the Fulbright Inter-Country Travel Grant Program, which enables U.S Fulbright Scholars to create connections with other fellow scholars and institutions in their field in Europe. Each year approx. 200 American Fulbright visiting professors are affiliated with a university in Europe.
Danish higher education institutions can apply for one of these U.S. Fulbright professors to visit them for a maximum of one week, for example to give lectures, participate actively in seminars and workshops, etc.
Similarly, US Fulbright Scholars in Denmark can get invited to other institutions across Europe, and thus enrich their professional and cultural experience outside of Denmark.
If you wish to invite a US Fulbright Scholar
Please find a list of eligible scholars and read more about the application process here.
If you are a US Fulbright Scholar
Please ask the inviting institution to confirm that the Fulbright Commission in the inviting country offers Inter-Country Travel Grants. If so, you should apply for an Inter-Country Travel Grant directly with the relevant Commission. Fulbright Denmark may be contacted by the relevant Commission to confirm our approval of the travels.
Eligibility
The inter-country scholar visit must take place during the U.S. Scholar’s Fulbright grant period.

Fulbright Specialist
The Fulbright Specialist Program – 2-6 weeks in Denmark
The Fulbright Specialist Program, part of the larger Fulbright Program, was established in 2001 by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The program is an initiative in which host institutions can invite highly qualified U.S. academic or professional specialists to contribute to and work on projects of shared interest. By sharing their expertise, the host institution and specialist work towards strengthening the linkages between the U.S. and the Danish host institution.
Fulbright Denmark accepts projects from host institutions with a named specialist in mind OR so-called open projects, where the concept of the project is articulated but no particular specialist is identified.
Project activities
Host institutions design collaborative projects in over 20 eligible disciplines, including education, business, law, environmental science, journalism, and public health. Specific project activities may include, but are not limited to:
- Delivering a seminar or workshop
- Consulting on faculty or workforce development
- Developing academic or training curricula and materials
- Co-lecturing at the graduate or undergraduate level
- Conducting needs assessments or evaluations for a program or institution
Below you can find examples of previous projects:
All Host Institutions
Vocational Colleges and Schools of Applied Science
Institutions within the Arts
Non-Academic Institutions
Projects must be between 14-42 days (travel days included). Multi-visits may be possible, but the combined number of days for both visits cannot exceed 42 days.
Timeline and application procedure
Read this timeline for named projects, where host institutions and prospective specialists have established contact ahead of their application.
Read this timeline for open projects, where the host institution has identified a project but needs assistance with finding a relevant specialist.
Two possible tracks
1. NAMED SPECIALIST
The host can develop a project proposal collaboratively with a specific individual (i.e. named project model). We strongly recommend that the Danish institution is in contact with any individuals of interest before submitting the project proposal to confirm the scholar’s interest and availability. The scholar should also be sure register in the so-called Specialist Roster for review. The Roster is a database, where all Specialists have to register to be pre-approved.
2. OPEN PROJECT MODEL
Through the open project model, Fulbright Denmark can directly recruit individuals from U.S. colleges for the project of a Danish institution. This is an excellent way for the Danish host to be able to review multiple potential candidates with a strong interest in their project.
