Anna Weldy, American Fulbrighter, Spring 2021

Anna Weldy arrived in Denmark in the beginning of January 2021 to do research at the University of Copenhagen. Here she tells us how it was arriving in the middle of a pandemic.

I am from Rochester, New York, where I recently finished my bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering at the University of Rochester.  Currently, I am conducting research in Hanne Mørck Nielsen‘s drug delivery lab in the Department of Pharmacy at København Universitet.  My project is focusing on combing thiomers into a drug delivery system to increase uptake of therapeutics in the GI tract.

When I first arrived in Denmark at the beginning of January, I was tested at the airport and then quarantined for several days before testing again. I spend the first few weeks reading papers at home, as well as attending a 3 week Danish language course virtually over Zoom.

Luckily, the lab has still been functioning, though we follow all necessary precautions and work from home when possible.  The other students and professors in the lab have been incredibly welcoming and supportive, and I am deeply enjoying delving into my research project.  Outside of work in the lab, I have enjoyed getting together with friends for walks and dinners, as well as cycling around the city.  I also recently visited Møns Klint over a weekend, which was very enjoyable and beautiful.
