Henry Henson, Arctic Research Centre at Aarhus University, 2020-2021

Our first American Fulbrighter in the academic year (AY) 2020-2021 has arrived in Denmark. After two weeks of quarantine Henry Henson is ready to embark on his studies at the Arctic Research Centre at Aarhus University and later in the AY at the Greenland Climate Research Centre (GCRC) in Nuuk, Greenland.

My name is Henry Henson. I am 22 years old. I grew up in Minnesota, USA  as the child of two veterinarians. I spent my childhood spending a lot of my time taking care of our variety of animals and playing outside, fascinated by the natural world. As I grew older and attended university I became increasingly interested in how the Earth is changing, particularly in polar regions. Last year I graduated from St. Olaf College with a bachelors degree in Biology and Environmental Studies.

This year, I was fortunate to be awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study the implications of climate change on the Arctic. I will spend this fall at the Arctic Research Centre at Aarhus University studying how element cycling and population ecology will be affected by a changing climate. Following this time in Aarhus, I will build upon this experience by studying at the Greenland Climate Research Centre (GCRC) in Nuuk, Greenland during the spring. While there, I will perform field work evaluating the status of biological resources critical to life in Nuuk.

I hope to work with and learn from both researchers at the GCRC and local Kalaallit community members to learn about climate change’s effects from both traditional and western perspectives.

Now that I have arrived here in Denmark, I am so excited to get to know the Danes that live here in Aarhus and share our cultures over food and conversations. I am also starting Dansk undervisning to improve my Danish language skills so I can better  get to know the people both here in Aarhus and later in Nuuk!
